Updated on 10.03.20257 min read
Moving in Switzerland requires good planning. With this checklist, you'll keep track of all important steps — from 3 months before to after moving in.

3 months before

• Give proper notice on your old lease (registered mail!) • Find a new apartment and sign the lease • Get quotes from moving companies and compare • Organize the deposit for your new apartment • Inform private insurances (household, liability)

1–2 months before

• Set up mail forwarding at the post office • Prepare address changes (employer, bank, insurances, health insurance, tax authority) • Declutter: sell, donate or dispose of unneeded items • Get moving boxes and packing materials • Apply for no-parking zone for moving truck (if needed)

1–2 weeks before

• Pack systematically room by room, label boxes • Organize tradespeople for repairs in old apartment • Set up phone/internet at new location • Organize or confirm moving helpers • Keep important documents separately and accessible

On moving day

• Completely empty and clean old apartment (or hire cleaners) • Read meter readings (electricity, water, gas) • Old apartment handover: create and sign protocol • Return all keys (including mailbox, cellar, laundry) • New apartment takeover: document condition

Within 14 days after moving

• Register at the residents' registration office of your new municipality (mandatory!) • New municipality = new tax rate — check on Wohnungsindex.ch for the tax burden • Re-register your vehicle (cantonal road traffic office) • Update electoral rolls • Dog owners: register your dog in the new municipality

Cost overview

A move in Switzerland costs between CHF 800 and 3,500 for a professional moving company, depending on distance and apartment size. Add: rental deposit (1–3 months' rent), renovation costs for old apartment, mail forwarding (CHF 45–85) and possibly double rent during the transition.
